Pastor's Letter
A Church That Walks with Local Young Artists
This summer Hanyang Church began supporting Art for Life, a community of second‑generation Korean American young artists. Rev. Yang‑In, Interim Pastor, shares how it started.

[August 1, 2026 — Northridge, CA] Summer is always hot. But this year, our hearts are burning even hotter than the season itself—because God has opened a new path for our church. It is a path that leads us directly into the lives of young people.
This summer, our church began a meaningful new ministry. Its name is still tentative, but under the title Art for Life, a community of second‑generation Korean American young artists has begun to gather.
This connection began through our relationship with the Athletes for Life Foundation. Each summer, this foundation partners with the Compton Unified School District (CUSD) to run sports and education programs for youth in the Compton area. They provide free instruction to teenagers facing economic and social challenges, helping them develop life skills, responsibility, teamwork, confidence, and leadership. To date, more than 7,000 youth have participated, and over 8,000 have received mentoring.
This summer, fifteen second‑generation Korean American artists joined the program as art instructors. When Hanyang Church heard this beautiful news, we offered support by providing acrylic art supplies and canvas bags.
Greg Bell, former NFL player and founder of Athletes for Life in 1989, once said:
“What changed my life were great mentors. Now we want to help kids discover their dreams and pursue them.”
His vision was to transform the lives of the next generation through sports. His personal experience, his dream, and the dedication of many supporters continue to open new futures for the youth of Compton.
Through this process, I discovered another possibility. The second‑generation Korean American artists who participated are mostly Gen Z college graduates. They are the first generation to grow up with smartphones and social media, and they value diversity, fairness, the environment, mental health, and social responsibility. Above all, they are young people gifted with artistic talent from God.
A question suddenly came to mind: “How is the church remembered in the hearts of these young people?”
Before inviting them into the church, we decided first to step into their lives. I said this to one young adult who had attended church as a child:
“If you and your friends want to meet regularly, our church will support your monthly gathering costs with no conditions. You choose the time and place. Build your own Korean‑American Artists community.”
His eyes lit up. His reaction seemed to say, I can’t believe a Korean church cares about something like this! It wasn’t our financial support but our sincerity that first moved their hearts. And that is how Art for Life began.
Athletes for Life — sports that bring life.
Art for Life — art that brings life.
Whenever I think of these names, I sense the fragrance of the gospel. I believe the church must gladly join in any work that saves people, builds the next generation, and shares God’s life.
The mission of the church does not end with bringing young people into the church building. Rather, it is to go into the places where they live, walk with them, encourage their dreams, and show God’s love through our lives. I am deeply grateful that Hanyang Church has begun to walk this path, even if only a little. I pray that our small acts of service will one day become seeds of God planted in their hearts.
“The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:2)

이 만남은 Athletes for Life Foundation과의 인연에서 시작되었습니다.
1989년 Athletes for Life를 설립한 전 NFL 선수 Greg Bell은 이렇게 말했습니다.
그렇게 해서 Art for Life가 시작되었습니다.
Athletes for Life.
Art for Life.
